Technology

IoT Scotland is powered by LoRaWAN® technology.

LoRaWAN® is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) providing effective long-range communications at a low bit rate between sensors and application servers, using very little power, making it ideal to support battery operated sensor devices.

As an open standard IoT network technology, LoRaWAN® provides access to a wide range of smart sensors and solutions on a global scale, without being tied to a proprietary solution or technology.

LoRaWAN® provides low bandwidth data communication at speeds of between 250 bit/s and 11kbits/s over long distances. Making it the ideal technology for sensor-based networks.

The technology is very low power enabling sensors to operate on batteries for multiple years – a critical factor when deploying large numbers of sensors, especially into remote or hard to reach areas.

All LoRaWAN® data packets are encrypted using 128-bit end to end ensuring overall secure communications.
