Aberdeen City Council
Lighting up the City of Aberdeen
Aberdeen City Council wanted to explore innovative uses of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to improve many aspects of city life for citizens and businesses and to deliver sustainability and decarbonisation improvements.
Intelligent street lighting was decided as the anchor IoT project to complement the LED head replacement programme the council was already undertaking, to help achieve additional savings on their street lighting energy consumption and costs, whilst also delivering operational and maintenance efficiencies.
North provided Aberdeen City Council with a CMS-based (Central Management System) Intelligent Lighting solution and city-wide IoT network to subsidise the design and deployment of other IoT-based smart solutions.
The project saw a state-of-the-art IoT solution installed to manage and monitor more than 37,000 street lighting units remotely, enhancing the city’s lighting provision, whilst simultaneously helping to create a greener and safer city for the people of Aberdeen.
North’s intelligent solution is supporting Aberdeen City Council with its Net Zero Aberdeen Route Map, a city-wide approach to reducing carbon emissions and helping Aberdeen become a Smart City. Intelligent Lighting enables the remote maintenance of lighting systems, and is improving energy efficiencies and lowering carbon emissions in line with the council’s Net Zero targets. The project was also recognised across the UK, winning the Sustainable Customer Project of the Year category at the CRN Tech Impact Awards.
